Varna's ancient history is hidden deep in the past centuries. The name of the town was mentioned for the first time in the 6th century BC when the Asia Minor Greeks from the town of Miletus founded a colony in the existing here Thracian settlement. The town was named Odessos and was know with this name until 6th century AD. The newly on these places Slav population called it Varna.

The rich in events history of the town has left us numerous monuments of civilization. The famous Varna gold treasure from the New Stone Age that takes the beginning of human civilization as early as the 5th millennium BC is know worldwide. Greats is the number of the monuments from the ancient Thracian, Greek and Roman epochs - the fortress walls of the town, the unique Roman thermal baths, the baths from the Byzantine epoch, the famous rock monastery of Aladja, churches and other Bulgarian medieval monuments. The well-run museum have preserved valuable relics from the town's past.

In our days Varna is one of the greats cultural and scientific in Bulgaria with its popular Drama Theatre, Puppet Theatre, Opera Theatre, Philharmonic Orchestra, Festival and congress centre, higher educational establishments, scientific and research institutes. The town deservedly hosts great number of international scientific congress and symposia, different international festivals and competitions: Varna Summer International Music Festival, International Ballet Competition, Love is Folly International Film Festival, International Print Biennial, Golden Dolphin International Puppet Festival, Otkritie (Discovery) International Pop Singers Festival and a number of national festival and competitions.

Since 1998 a new musical event has enriched the cultural life in Varna - the International Music Festival entitled "Sea and memories". It has become a meeting Place from different counters, of different age and interests. The town of Varna is one worldwide famous sea resorts. Its geographic location, the beautiful environs, the beaches provided with all utilities, the ancient history and the modern appearance of Varna make it an attractive place of both Bulgarian and foreign tourists. The existence of hot mineral springs provides excellent conditions for its functioning as resort throughout the year.
